Surveying
Published in Paperback by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (September, 1992)
Authors: A. Bannister, S. Raymond, and R. Baker
Average review score:

Excellent surveying text
This text is a continuation of the high quality of earlier editions. It covers modern methods, without completely removing some of the more useful older methods of work. It is delivered in a compact form, without any loss of depth. Also, it is at least $14 cheaper than any comparable US surveying text.

Well-tested methods are provided here, and the text is sufficiently comprehensive to cover several courses at a range of different levels. This would cover a great deal of what is needed for an associates degree program, and the foundation of a Bachelors program (1.5 years of the main program). This is far better than most books in this field, and it is a better book.

Being a British book, there are a few limitations for the US market. The book is metric, which will pain a few people in the US who can't handle this (but then why are they in the surveying game?). The terminology is British (e.g. 'staff' vs 'rod'), but this is a relatively minor concern, and will expose students to the idea that Surveying is a multi-national discipline, especially important with FIG being based in the US at the moment. There is no coverage of cadastral issues, including PLSS, but that can be obtained from other works, and doesn't apply to all parts of the US, as it happens.

Highly recommended. It is the OSU text for Surveying and Geomatics Engineering students.

Tax Shift: How to Help the Economy, Improve the Environment, and Get the Tax Man Off Our Backs (New Report, No. 7)
Published in Paperback by Northwest Environment Watch (April, 1998)
Authors: Alan Thein Durning, Yoram Bauman, Rachel Gussett, Northwest Environment Watch (Organization), and Don Baker
Average review score:

Possibly the simplest, most powerful way to save the earth
If you have always thought jobs and the environment were at odds with one another, read this book and see that there are very sensible ways to help the environment AND the economy at the same time. See how current tax policies penalize exactly the things we want more of (employment, environmental protection), and subsidize exactly the things we want less of (pollution, pillaging). The authors make their points powerfully and convincingly, yet with a surprisingly light, readable touch. Normally I would never read a book with "tax" in the title, but this is not a typical book. Any thinking citizen should take a look, and anyone interested in government, politics, or activism should read it as soon as possible. It will give you new perspective on how we run our society, and on how we should.

Update: the principles in this book are so impressive that the notion of a tax shift, and a related concept the "feebate", have entered the mainstream political agenda in the province of British Columbia, Canada. It's a persuasive book!

Team Baseballs: Comprehensive guide ........
If you collect team baseballs, this is the reference book you will want to own. However be aware it only covers up to 1991. It is a great source of who the key players by year and team. It also lists all-star teams and key players. It does, however need to be updated to reflect current values, players and teams after 1991.

Ten Years Beyond Baker Street: Sherlock Holmes Matches Wits With the Diabolical Dr. Fu Manchu
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (February, 1984)
Author: Cay Van Ash
Average review score:

A Joy For Mystery Fans
The late Cay van Ash was head of the Department of Literature at Tokyo's prestigious Waseda University. He was also the author of an authorized biography of Sax Rohmer, MASTER OF VILLAINY. This is the second of van Ash's three novels (the first was published under a pseudonym in the 1940's) and it is a delightful recreation of the worlds of Sherlock Holmes and Fu Manchu. The book fits seamlessly into the continuity of both HIS FINAL BOW and THE HAND OF FU MANCHU. Long-time readers of Conan Doyle and Rohmer will thrill to read how effortlessly van Ash revives these beloved characters. For anyone who has been disappointed with the portrayal of Holmes in countless pastiches, you can rest assured that van Ash recaptures the spirt and character of the original. Best of all, for Fu Manchu fans, van Ash leaves the door open for future authors to mine ideas from the opening of this wonderful literary re-creation.

Thailand's Boom and Bust
Published in Paperback by University of Washington Press (1998)

Average review score:

Clear, Well Written, Insightful and Comprehensive
This is the most interesting and easily read book I have ever come across dealing with issues of economic and political development. Thai politics and economics are complex and confusing. This book makes sense of the conflicting strains in Thailand and will enable even a novice to makes sense of of information from Thai newspapers. Fascinating for anyone interested in global economics or Thai culture.

Thailand, Economy and Politics
Published in Hardcover by Oxford Univ Pr (September, 1995)
Authors: Pasuk Phongpaichit, Chris Baker, Pasuk Phongpaichit, and Baker Pasuk
Average review score:

An excellent, readable review of Thai political hsitory
In the past, Thai history was written by noblemen and created an idyll of a virtuous past, filled with happy peasants living a simple life under the watchful eye of benevolent despots. Unfortunately, many Westerners followed in this tradition, although they (and Thai nobles) criticized more recent, military regimes. This book breaks out of that box and makes it clear that life has never been easy for Thai peasants and that upper classes have rarely been all that virtuous. The authors also show a much more diverse Thailand than the "homogeneity" that is popularly ascribed. In addition, they detail the corruption of recent decades that should make Americans (as well as Japanes and others) who abetted it ashamed of the role they've played in in supporting horrible regimes. An excellent volume that is revisionist in the most positive sense of the word.

Thoughts about "A Thoughtful Moment"
We live in a bustling, whirling, noisy, roller-coaster of a World. Mrs. Baker reminds us that this is what life is and we can gain a great deal of healing by accepting the ever-changing terrain of life and enjoy it. Her book is filled with gentle reminders of how we can regain composure, focus and inner peace. Each "thoughtful moment" is like planting a seed. As I go through the days, weeks and months, this seed continues growing and begins to yield bountiful fruit as I maintain that inner reflection on my interactions in life ... this is a must read for all people who work with people and especially for those who work in stressful settings.
